CERI RACE FESTIVAL - Gubbio - May 15th 2008
Every year, on 15th May, the streets of Gubbio are full of colors,
with thousands of Gubbio citizens leading the three Candles, weighting
each one more than 4 quintals, in an exalting race from the city
to the Basilica of St. Ubaldo, through the medieval streets and
up on the hill for a dip of more than 300 m. The belonging to the
Candle is a very important fact in the life of a Gubbio citizen, it is a sort of qualifying emblem linked to the kind of job that
in past was passing from father to son from a generation to the
other. The colors of the uniforms of the "ceraiole" (candle holders)
are linked to the cloths of the protecting Saint of the corporations:
yellow for the "ceraioli" of St. Ubaldo, blue for those of St. Giorgio
and black for those of St Antonio. These manifestations, unique
of that kind, in addition to attracting thousands of persons, are
also the testimony of a secular tradition that has always unified
the entire Gubbio population; this is the confirmation of an authentic
devotion for the Saints of the antique corporations of the mason
bricklayers, traders and farmers. The remembrance of this event
is so important inside the region that the "Ceri" are nowadays the
institutional symbol of Umbria.

RACING SILK OF THE CROSSBOW - Gubbio - May 25th 2008
Within the ancient walls of Gubbio an uninterrupted tradition is
preserved: the Racing silk of the Crossbow. This contest of arms
dating back to the XII century, is still celebrated between blasts
of bugles and fluttering of flags in the evocative square Piazza
Grande, beautiful with its palaces of the XIV century and crowded
of people which clap the hands to every shot of crossbow.The crossbow
or "Balista", cited officially for the first time in Italy
in the documents of the second Lateran Council in year 1139,
was the most dangerous arm until the '400s. Every free commun had
its own standard team of crossbowmen, plus a special one to escort
and defend the city magistrates.
In such, the Society of the Crossbowmen was risen, regulated by
laws still actual today, on whose ability the outcome of the battle
often depended.
When the fire-crews took definitively over the crossbow, the latter
survived as an ideal reason and noble memory of the city glories.
Today the ritual Middle Age tournement between the old Biturgio
(Sansepolcro) and Gubbio is renewed in the last Sunday of May when,
at the end of the bloomed May, the crossbowmen of Biturgo, accept
the challenge of Gubbio and cross the doors of the city in order
to compete and win.

TOURNAMENT OF QUINTANA - Foligno - June 13th and 14th 2008
During which knights from its ten districts compete for the coveted
Palio. Each rider must charge his horse and attempt to send his
lance through the progressively smaller rings that are attached
to the “Quintana” wooden statue. But the Quintana is more than just
a joust, it is a colourful event that involves all of Foligno’s
inhabitants and a celebration of the history, customs and even food
of the lavish baroque era when the town was at the peak of its wealth.
Throughout the event the city’s museums, magnificent palazzi and
churches will be open to the public.

GAITE MARKET - Bevagna - June from 15th to 29th 2008
The popular Gaite market of Bevagna, during which the town catapults
